The library is the research library of the Australian National Maritime Museum, located just a short walk from the main Museum building. The collection reflects the activities and collecting interests of the museum. It includes: Publications relating to the museum's permanent exhibition themes, standard reference sources for research on ships and shipping, and has a good collection of journals on shipbuilding, yachting and surfing.

Ships and shipwrecks in Australian waters in this Encyclopedia are listed in alphabetical order within location. The aim is to provide a brief description of the vessel followed by a reference to further published works.
AUSTRALIA - HYDE PARK BARRACKS
The World Heritage listed Hyde Park Barracks is one of the most significant convict sites in the world. Convicts 1819-1847; Sydney's female Immigration Depot 1848-1887; courts and government offices 1887-1979 and Hyde Park Barracks Musuem 1979 to present time. AUSTRALIA - IRISH FAMINE MEMORIAL SYDNEY
The Australian Monument to the Great Irish Famine (1845 - 1852) is located at the Hyde Park Barracks, on Macquarie Street, Sydney, Australia. This website introduces you to the monument itself, to this particular emigration scheme which operated between 1848 - 1850, to the women themselves and the ships on which they travelled.

AUSTRALIA - QUEENSLAND STATE ARCHIVES - ASSISTED IMMIGRATION 1848-1912
The registers contain passenger lists of immigrant ships arriving in Queensland, they provide direct access to digital copies from the Registers of Immigrant Ships’ Arrivals, 1848 - 1912.
AUSTRALIA - REGISTER OF AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND VESSELS
The register of Australian and New Zealand vessels is a private project. Lists and card records were drawn up in those earlier years including a card-based Register of Historic Vessels administered by the Sydney Maritime Museum. This electronic register commenced in 2000. There are currently more than 47,000 vessels recorded.
AUSTRALIA - SOUTH AUSTRALIA - BOUND FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA 1836-1851
Bound for South Australia has passenger lists for 3,000 Overseas and local Ships that arrived in port, plus information on 60,000 individual passengers, reports on many of the voyages, plus more than 30 ship journals and diaries between 1836-1851. The site also has 200 images of South Australian pioneers from 1836-1840.
AUSTRALIA - SOUTH AUSTRALIA - PASSENGERS IN HISTORY
The passengers data base was produced by volunteers at the South Australian Maritime Museum, especially Rob Lincoln, over 20 years. It includes entries for 250,000 passengers and 20,000 voyages to South Australia between 1836 and 1961.
AUSTRALIA - SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SHIPPING ARRIVALS 1836 - 1843
Sources for South Australian Shipping Records 1836 to 1842 lists of all the sources of records for each of the 1,500 voyages into South Australia. It names of all the emigration applicants. Information listed gives the vessel name and voyage details, the sources, and a listing of passengers.

The museum re-creates the real life stories of coming to Australia with a rich mix of moving images, personal and community voices, memories and memorabilia.
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL SHIPWRECKS DATABASE
This database includes all known shipwrecks in Australian waters. New features include many extra fields of information, the capacity to attach images to shipwrecks, the ability to link shipwrecks to relics recovered from shipwreck sites, site environment information for divers and site managers and a history field with the ability to attach documents that include names of passengers and crew.
CANADA - HOME CHILDREN
This is a major immigrant group, especially to Ontario, because between 1869 to the early 1930s, 100,000 British, Scottish and Irish children came to Canada to work as farm labourers, or in the case of girls, as domestics and they were called Home Children.
CANADA - IMMIGRANTS TO CANADA
The site has a collection of record extracts documenting immigrants to Canada in the nineteenth century. This includes voyage accounts, lists of ships sailing to Canada, 1800s emigrant handbooks that document life for the Canadian immigrant and government immigration reports.
CANADA - PASSENGER LIST INDEXING PROJECT
This project was carried out by the Nanaimo Family History Society of British Columbia and they have recorded 757, 749 passengers from 31 July 1903 to 13 October 1910 going to Montreal and Quebec City. Many people who eventually ended up in the United States came from the old country on these ships.
CANADA - PASSENGER LISTS - PORT OF QUEBEC CITY AND OTHER PORTS 1865-1922
Passenger Lists of immigrants arriving at an official port of entry on a particular ship on a given date for the Port of Quebec City and Other Canadian Ports, 1865-1922. Each manifest gives: the name of the ship, its port(s) and date(s) of departure, its port(s) and date(s) of arrival in Canada and the name, age, sex, profession or occupation, nationality and destination of each passenger aboard.
ENGLAND - BATTLESHIPS CRUISERS
One of the internet's largest naval history sites. Search the site to find lists of all the world's navy ships from the nineteenth century to the present day, with photos, histories and paintings on many of the ships.
ENGLAND - CREW LIST INDEX PROJECT
CLIP was set up to improve access to the records of British merchant seafarers of the late 19th century and has gathered the largest database of entries from crew lists of merchant seafarers on British registered ships for the years 1861 to 1913. The site provides guidance and finding aids to help you carry out your own research.

Approximately 39,000 crew lists featuring over 750,000 names are available and searchable online.
ENGLAND - ENGLAND'S IMMIGRANTS DATABASE
England’s Immigrants 1330 - 1550, a fully-searchable database containing over 64,000 names of people known to have migrated to England during the period of the Hundred Years’ War and the Black Death, the Wars of the Roses and the Reformation.
ENGLAND - IMMIGRANT ANCESTORS PROJECT
Immigrant Ancestors is a project sponsored by Brigham Young University's Center for Family History and Genealogy. To create the database, student interns gather emigrant records from repositories throughout Europe, then bring them back to the project team at Brigham Young University (BYU). The contents are then extracted and verified by BYU student researchers before being added to the database.
ENGLAND - IMMIGRANTS 1330-1550
The England’s Immigrants 1330-1550, has a fully-searchable database containing over 64,000 names of people known to have migrated to England during the period of the Hundred Years’ War and the Black Death, the Wars of the Roses and the Reformation.
ENGLAND - LLOYD'S REGISTER OF SHIPS
These digitised Registers can be searched by any of the fields such as ship name, master, ship owner or place of build. Sailing vessel volumes for 1893-4 and 1896-9 have been scanned in, the steamer volumes and separate appendix for these years are not yet available online. The Register Book for 1764-66 is now available to view in PDF format. The Registers for 1930 - 1945 fields can be searched by ship name(s), year of build and gross tonnage.
ENGLAND - MARITIME MEMORIALS

FINLAND - FINNISH EMIGRANT REGISTER
The emigrant register was created in 1989 to serve both Finnish genealogists and the descendants of Finnish emigrants abroad searching for their roots. Pay site.
FINLAND - MIGRATION INSTITUTE OF FINLAND
The Migration Institute has a huge amount of information in the collections that will help in a search of emigrated relatives. Genealogists have the full use of the archive materials, such as letters, photos, microfilms and other documents. The library holds, Finnish expatriate societies' and organizations' year books, local histories, Finnish expatriate newspapers and magazines, family history publications and other related literature.
GERMANY- BREMEN PASSENGER LIST
The majority of the outbound passenger lists from the major German port of Bremen were either destroyed due to lack of archival space, or lost during WWII. 2,851 passenger lists for the years 1920 - 1939 were discovered to still exist (600,000+ passengers), and are transcribed here. The site is in German and you will need to click on the ENGLISH flag on the right side of page.
GERMANY- EMIGRATION FROM SOUTHWEST GERMANY
The Landesarchiv Baden-Wurttemberg has a large searchable database of emigrant Germans from Baden, Hohenzollern and Wurttemberg.
IRELAND - IRISH FAMINE ARCHIVE
The purpose of the Digital Irish Famine Archive is to make accessible eyewitness accounts of the Irish famine migration to Canada in 1847 - 1848 that would otherwise be unknown. It also pays tribute to those who cared for Irish famine emigrants.
IRELAND - IRISH MARINERS
The website has details of over 23,000 Irish born and 1,000 Canadian born merchant seamen and their voyages contained in the CR10 series of central index cards held in the Southampton Civic Archives.
NEW ZEALAND - IMMIGRANT SHIPS TO NEW ZEALAND 1835 - 1910
The ships in this index were mostly used to transport the half million immigrants to New Zealand from the United Kingdom, Ireland and the world during the period 1835 to 1910.
